Unbridled Summer Night

HKO, RSO, Dalia Stasevska, Lauri Porra, Paperi T & Danceteam International

Fri 19.8. 19:00

Classical, ambient, Shakespeare, hip hop and premieres – the ensemble kicking off the Helsinki Festival at the Helsinki Music Centre is a multi-artistic cornucopia that defies convention in surprising ways.

The premiere of power metal musician and composer Porra’s work will feature the most interesting Finnish rapper of the moment, Paperi T, and Porra himself. The surprising union of rap and classical music brings out new, unprecedented nuances from both genres. Adding its personal twist to the composition is Porra’s unique omniwerk instrument. The latest piece of Magnus Lindberg is, as always, a much-expected occasion.

Mendelssohn’s beloved interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream receives fresh blood as parts of it are interpreted by a colourful group of internationally-renowned street dancers from Finland and five other countries. The love adventures and mishaps in a nocturnal forest are portrayed in the form of hip hop, locking, breakdance, African modern dance and popping.

The evening ends with the Finnish premiere of the American John Luther Adams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning work Become Ocean. The composition, which paints a massive ambient soundscape, is like a wallowing ocean.

The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra are conducted by Dalia Stasevska.
